Local Music and Festivals are a Great Combination

As the weather is getting warmer and the signs of spring and summer approach, my mind turns to one thought; music festivals. In Fort Collins, and in most areas around the country, music festivals and traveling tours are staring to kick off this season, so I wanted to share with you some great local Colorado artists that you can enjoy.

The first of these is a band that has just released their first album, Newman's Own Choirtitled Newman’s Open Choir, is from Fort Collins artist Catch Bees.  With a unique blend of folk, rock, and singer/songwriter genres, Catch Bees is the perfect artist for a springtime stroll out and about the town. I particularly love the tracks Atlanta (featuring another amazing artist, Denison Witmer), and The Prayer of St. John, both of which just put me in a wonderful mood! I hope that you enjoy this first album of what I’m sure will become many albums from Catch Bees.

Also hailing fromCards with Cheats our hometown is the band You Me and Apollo. Once the solo act of lead singer and front man Brent Cowels, this now full band has a sound that is hard to pin down, but reminds me of Brett Dennen, but with a uniquely distinct twist as well as, in my opinion, more interesting and unique vocals. I had the opportunity to see Cowels play a live solo show after wandering into a bar he was playing at one evening and can confidently say that the live performances are (somehow) even more captivating than the recordings.  Check out the songs Oh, Brother and We Got a Roof, as well as the rest of their album Cards with Cheats.

Following trends of piano led rock and a hint of punk vocals, Rescue the LightAshtree has just released their first album, Rescue the Light. The remind me of another local band I saw a couple times and still regularly listen to, Meese, who has since split ways. Both bands are out of Denver, and have a pop-rock feel that can share a stage with bands like the Fray or Parachute (in fact Ashtree did already open a show for Parachute). I recommend Wide Open and the title track Rescue the Light to check this new band out.

Have fun listening to these great artists that we in Colorado are lucky enough to claim as our own! You can check out Catch Bees and You Me and Apollo at Fort Collins own music festival FoCoMX, and Ashtree is playing a number of shows in and around the Denver area. Don’t forget to bring along apps like SoundHound and Shazam to identify tunes you love, and apps like Pandora or Spotify to fill the silences between the live show acts! Songkink also helps discover when artists you love are playing near you, so you never miss a show!

You can listen to all the songs in this post here, as well as the songs from last month. Happy Listening!
