OtterBox at SXSW — Day 1
Every year, thousands of people descend upon Austin like ants to a picnic for South by Southwest (SXSW). It’s a mix of techies, games, hipsters, musicians, makers, socialites and celebrities. You never know who you’ll run across or where you’ll end up as you walk down 6th street toward the epicenter of the festival. Each day during the interactive part of this awesome festival we’ll post our favorite things.
Day 1 is often the slowest day of the festival and so attendees only had a few options, which meant the conference was standing room only. The keynote had so many people in attendance that the festival had to broadcast it in multiple rooms. We tried to attend most of the tech sessions but unfortunately we weren’t able to get to all of them. So, we’ve listed the top four things we came across:
- Today we received our second glimpse into XBOX SmartGlass. While SmartGlass was officially announced at E3 last June, today we received a bit more information and heard about the added features that will be available for the HBO show Game of Thrones and oh, how we love Game of Thrones. XBOX SmartGlass second screen will allow you to go deeper into the series’ universe and characters, look at family trees and even share your favorite quote from the show. Additionally, you’ll be able to delve into character backgrounds and maps of the kingdoms. Now, if only it could tell us why Joffrey is so cruel or how we can get dragons.
- Our second favorite thing of the day revolves around MakerBot. 3D printing is probably one of the coolest things that technology has brought us in the past three years. However, today MakerBot made it even cooler by announcing a new digitizer. The digitizer makes it so you don’t have to be an expert CAD user to use a 3D printer. Instead, you can scan something between 2 inches and 8 inches high and it will make a pattern for you. Additionally, they announced a new partnership with AutoDesk to make 3D plans a bit easier to create. Bre Pettis, MakerBot CEO, showed a sample called 123D Creature that enables you to make creatures of all types. We can’t wait to try it out and create our own Otter-inspired characters.
- We also were able to catch one of the hidden gem sessions of day 1 — a panel discussing video series helmed by the heads of Machinima, BlackBox and Rooster Teeth. They shared some interesting stories about how the community helps build their videos and they encouraged the audience to create more. If you have a chance, check out their YouTube channels in the links above.
- SXSW isn’t just about gaming and technology, it’s also about film and we were lucky enough to get tickets to the first screening of “The incredible Burt Wonderstone” starring Jim Carey, Steve Carell and Olivia Wilde. We also learned that one of our favorite TV characters Sweets (John Frances Daly) from Bones actually helped write the movie. We tried to get an interview to see what you would find if you looked in his phone, but we couldn’t get to the actor fast enough. The movie was fantastically funny and we encourage you to check it out. We’ve posted the trailer below & a photo of the actors on Instagram.
