OtterBox at SXSW Interactive — Day 4
SXSW Interactive is winding down and only has a few more sessions before it’s officially all about music and film. Even the last party of the interactive festival had a cameo from Owen Wilson instead of Mark Zukerburg.
This year’s SXSW was a bit different then previous years, it wasn’t filled with new apps or software innovations but filled with grander ideas of life changing hardware like 3D printing and Elon Musk’s Grasshopper rocket.
However, we still found some great tech that might interest you and below are our top four takeaways:
- Leap Motion 3D motion-control device. Using a USB connection, the device creates four cubic feet of space to interact with a computer. The controls are similar to using a touch screen computer in the air. The device was introduced in May 2012, but the company recently released a software development kit for iOS devices.
- MIT Media Lab had a great session today and showed some projects that they are working on. Our favorite was the 8D Display which uses both ambient light and a 4D light field to allow for a glasses-free 360 degree 3D experience. It’s unbelievably cool and could change the way we experience movies.
- Shaquille O’Neill — We found out today that Shaq had some really good advisers and had invested in Google before the IPO. He took his good luck and actually had a “Pitch Shaq” event where app companies competed in a 15-second video contest through Tout. We didn’t see if the winners actually accepted Shaq’s funding but it is great to get a glimpse into the real “Shaquille O’Neal” and he might be more awesome then a quadricorn. (We can also say that he rocks a Defender Series!)
- Lastly, we would like to mention that Austin has officially been able to keep the tag line, “Keep Austin Weird.” We saw a furry van, a chicken standing in line and even a Sci-Fi city made out of storage containers. Check out our Instagram for some glimpses into photos from SXSW.
