Victory Challenge – Be Inspired & Vote Now

Posted on by OtterBox

We have been truly inspired by all of the stories you shared, thank you for taking the time to tell about your survivor’s journey into health and strength. It was difficult to pick three finalists, there were so many amazing women & storytellers out there!

After much debate, we have our finalists. Once you read their stories, please take a moment to vote for your favorite at the bottom of the page. The winner (& their storyteller) will receive a prize pack detailed in this post: Victory Challenge. Which one should have the opportunity to rebuild a room in their home to match their inner beauty? You tell us!

STORY #1 – Julie

My wife, Julie, came home from the gym yesterday morning and placed a post-it note on my desk that read “Don’t let your weakness trick you into thinking you lack strength.” I don’t know where she got that from but that about sums up how she feels about everything, including her victory over breast cancer.

Julie is a 2+ year survivor of stage 3c triple negative breast cancer at age 39. While cancer turned our lives upside down, it also blessed us by giving her and our family a second chance to re-prioritize and see life through a new lens – one of gratitude and service to others instead of the self-absorbed rat race we were in “pre-BC” (pre-breast cancer).

You see, my wife didn’t just survive breast cancer, she has used it to change our lives and that of others, for the better. She began by blogging about her journey and took it further by proactively reaching out to other newly diagnosed survivors to lend her support and share information about how to get through treatment and minimize side effects. She coaches others (for free) about how to discard unhealthy habits and practices and replace them with healthier ones that boost the immune system and give us a better chance at avoiding a diagnosis or a recurrence.

She didn’t stop there – she co-founded a cancer ministry at church that offers support to cancer patients, caregivers and anyone else touched by cancer in need of support and prayer. She joined forces with other survivors and produced a video “The Pink Wig Dance” to celebrate survivorship and raise awareness of aggressive breast cancer in young women, garnering support of a major recording artist and top health care providers. Now she’s working on a project that she hopes will reach and help many many more and I’m so proud of her and know that she’s making a difference not just in our house, but in the lives of others.

I would love for Julie to be recognized by Otterbox & Tomboy Tools for using her journey to help others.

STORY #2 – Kristie

First I want to say thank you Otterbox for giving me the opportunity to share the story of an amazing friend, mother & wife. You are truly an extraordinary company, with exceptional

support. I’ve included my story of my dear friend/family Kristie Newsome & a FEW pics, you can choose which ever one you would like to represent her.. Thank you again!

This is a story of a truly amazing women, she is a 30yr old newlywed with a 6month old daughter, fighting the battle of her life. She was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer this past August; she has since underwent a double mastectomy and begun a number of chemo rounds ,scheduled to end early next yr. We do our best to help with the day to day task. Through all this Kristie has been such a trooper, she had continued working until recently when the risk began to outway the reward. She loves her job as preschool teacher almost as much as being a mom to her beautiful daughter, Kendall. She is truly a blessing. Kristie was told back in ’09 she may have Breast Cancer, she handled it much like she has this time, the only difference was the terrify thought of not being able to have a child. I remember feeling so guilty for being over the moon, because I was pregnant and it came so easy for me. Here she was facing so many uncertainties, yet she was genuinely happy for me; she never once asked me not to talk about my pregnancy or showed resentment.

It ended up being as benign cyst and she later learned she carried the BRCA1 gene; inherited from her mom (who has fought her own battle with ovarian cancer). This gave her a new found need, not only want for a child. With the increased chances of having Breast Cancer in the future, she knew the sooner was better. Kendall was born in March, a short 5months before her mommy was given some of the hardest news she will ever hear. She has said, “I look at my peanut and husband and say I have the strength! It is in me. I will fight to the end and nothing will take me down or stop me.” This is our WARRIOR fighting to rebuild her life to the normalcy she once knew. I’m so proud of her, she empowers amazing STRENGTH!

STORY #3 – Jill

Imagine… Happily preparing for your second child at 8 months pregnant. The nesting urge in full swing, blissfully painting the nursery, enjoying your baby shower. Then WHAM! With one phone call (aka sucker punch) you now suddenly have breast cancer. A joyful time turned sour in one awful moment. How will you deal with the now urgent delivery of your baby, then caring for a newborn during chemo? Then how will you deal with a double mastectomy at the young age of 31? Oh, and one MORE thing! How will you ever, on top of all that, possibly cope with a husband who decides to abandon you in your greatest time of need, just two days after your mastectomies? So began my lovely sister Jill’s 2007 “cancer odyssey” that shaped her into the person she is today, a loving, strong, vibrant young survivor with a bucket list getting shorter all the time!

At her weakest following the mastectomies, I remember watching her shakily sign her name, bald and in PJs, in a very public bank lobby on emergency business. It was a sobering look at the toll the fight was taking on her. Newborn Lainey was a shining star in those dark days. The juxtaposition of a perfect new life and my sister’s fight for her own life was astounding.

Through God’s grace, those traumatic times gave way to a full recovery – four years in remission! She swears cancer was a blessing because the fight gave her a sense of strength and perspective she did not have previously. Her motto: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away”, exemplified by her new pastime – skydiving!

Now at her strongest, my survivor sister Jill is raising very happy, healthy 8 and 4 year old girls, Peyton and Lainey, while supporting them primarily on a teacher’s salary. She recently bought a cute little house that she’s fixing up to transform into a home. She’s a good-hearted person, an inspiring SURVIVOR, and deserving candidate for some OtterBox swag and DIY tools!

Voting will be open until October 30th at 11:59pm.

  2. Ellen Deffenbaugh says:

How can you pick one? They all should get one. It’s absurd to say one survivor’s story is better than the other.

    • OtterBox OtterBox says:

It is a really hard choice… and just as hard to pick only 3 finalists. All of the stories we received were incredibly inspiring, a true testament to all those who fight and survive breast cancer.

    • Rose says:

Ellen I agree with you, wish we could vote for all 3 of them, everyone of these ladies are Warriors and I admire them all. Am sure there’s even more to each of thier stories that’s not posted. I vote for Julie Punty Olsen, she’s been my inspiration for a long time, Good Luck to all of you and Love Ya Julie!

  3. Kerry Volk says:

God Bless all three of these strong ladies!!! My vote is for my cousin Kristie #2 as she ISNT in remission YET & is currently fighting for her life as she raises her 6 month old beauitful daughter…. I love you Kristie xoxox <3

  4. Amber says:

Great stories all! I’m rooting for Jill!

  5. Jessica Santos says:

I too am a BC survivor who was diagnosed while pregnant in 2009. My heart goes out to all these women, they all deserve to win. But when I was about to go through chemo while caring for my three month old, I attended my first support group to find out how in the world I would make it through this mess and still be a good mother. The night before I went I prayed that God would send me “strength.” Well he sent me Julie story #1! She literally handed me a pink bracelet after the meeting that said “strength” on it. I about fell over. She has not only survived her own battle but has helped countless women with theirs. She is one of God’s angels.

  6. Greg Brown says:

#1 Julie was also pregnant when she went through her chemo challenge. Her husband forgot to mention that fact and also she was bed bound for what I think was the last 3-4 months of her pregnancy!

    • Facts please says:

Are you positive of that? Check facts – she was not pregnant when she was diagnosed. Her son was already born. She was on bed rest for a portion of her pregnancy, but the cancer came later.

    • Diana says:

Julie was on bedrest for 19 weeks of her pregnancy. Her son was born 5 weeks premature, had lots of health issues with some hospitalizations and he was 11 months old when she was diagnosed. Julie has been through hell and back in 4 years’ time and instead of complaining she looks ahead and helps others. This is all documented in her blogs about her son and cancer journey and I’m her BFF so I know first-hand. :)

      • Facts please says:

Wonderful, then you know, as her “BFF” that she was not pregnant while undergoing chemo. Nobody is discounting her struggle, but one should check facts before soliciting sympathy under incorrect facts. Have a great day!

        • Diana says:

I never said that she was. In fact, I was providing the true facts to clarify. I don’t even know who Greg is and he is the one that said it. geez! LOL You have a great day too!

  7. Bob Lewis says:

All this ladies are awsome to have gone though this and still they heads are up Hight! To have a husband walk out is truely a bummer when your going though a sickness like this! Well my vote is for Julie and its hard to pick just one! But I like the way she is helping others work though the sickness as well! The church thing is great the video is great! So good luck to you all! And god bless all of the stories that Otter received in this contest, You all should fell like winners! I look up to Lance Armstrong so much as working though cancer and with what is has done in his cycling! There are tons of people in this world that would not be able to do half of what he has done in life after his cancer! So we all can learn from him and the others that make it though! And we can’t forget the people that weren’t so lucky to make it but it must take so much strengh! So again God bless you all! And never give up! You can’t and we can’t give up on life no matter what it hands you! God has a plan and we must trust him! Thanks for shareing your stories with us!

  8. Robert says:

Great stories but I found Julie’s inspirational!

  9. Ivan says:

My heart goes out to all that find themselves in this situation.
I am rooting for Jill too because she is my Daughter.

  10. Karen says:

One day Kristie also will be in remission like Julie and Jill. I feel the one that is going thru it now should get the votes. Vote for Kristie. God bless both Julie and Jill. My they remain in remission. God bless Kristie in her fight. Stay strong.

  11. Maureen says:

I am voting for kristie. I currently have a sister and two close friends fighting breast cancer. Of all three, Kristie is the youngest. She had a double mastectomy and has gone through this fight before for a long time with her mother. She has a beautiful seven month old daughter and winning this would encourage her so much!

  12. kathy wright-bevacqua says:

kristie and all the women stay strong and we all pray for all of you. much loveto allus women.

  13. Barb says:

All three of these ladies represent many who have won and lost their battle with this horrible disease. #3 Jill had a grandmother who also had a double mastectomy earlier in life, but she also fought and lived until 83 yrs of age. Several of us in the family have the BRCA gene along with Jill. Go ladies! Especially Jill!!! (She’s my niece.)

  14. Polly Shaughnessy says:

May God Bless all of you…Julie is though in fact a dear friend of mine, and she has always been there for me, who would I be if I wasn’t there for her! My vote is Julie!

  15. Cindy says:

This is very touching but also very sad. #3′s story is not complete truth. It’s very sad when people get fooled like that over something so serious and use something like this to trash others, falsely. She did survive cancer and for that I thank God. She went through hell and back and has survived so much. I pray that God blesses her and I pray that He heals her heart and helps her to move forward, out of the bitterness and sadness.

  16. Catherine Schwartzbaum says:

I have known Julie for 2 years now but she is, by far, one of the most courageous, tenacious, joyful women I have ever met. Just spend 5 minutes with her and her infectious passion, and you’d discover what I did-my complacency evaporated. She leaves you with a desire to wring every moment of life dry.

  17. shea-anne says:

    Julie has my vote!

  18. Paula says:

Inspiring women! While I wish all could win, they are ALL winners! My vote goes to Jill! Rock on to all the strong ladies!!

  19. Cindy says:

    I’m voting for #1! :)

  20. Cindy says:

I’m going to vote for #1! I have to say, knowing #3-Jill, I am sad to see someone use something so inspirational for mean-spirited untruths.

    • Tammy says:

Jill is a dear friend to me, and I was with her when she went through all of this. Please enlighten me. What part do you claim is not true?

  21. Jen says:

Jill is a TRUE inspiration. God bless her and she has my (and my friends) vote!

  22. DarioleMechele says:

I have known Julie for a couple of years now and she is a wonderful fighter. She is inspirational! God Bless Julie & US ALL!

  23. Janet Punty says:

Julie is a remarkable woman who has inspired many through her journey. She has reached out to many people and helped them in their time of need also. In my mind she is a winner – -

  24. Richelle says:

Julie, I’m awestruck by your inner fire and your commitment to serve to your sisterhood of survivors. I’m sure your light helps many find their way through times of darkness. You’ve got my support!
Congratulations to all three of you wonderful women!

  25. Martha Corbett says:

Julie, you have my vote as you are making all of us strong!
